1991 TOYOTA PREVIA PROBLEMS

Common Complaints and Reliability

• 1. Fire hazards:

  • driver noticed a burning smell. Driver pulled over where his vehicle caught fire and was totaled.
    
  • car was parked overnight and caught on fire due to an electrical short in the radio. Car was totaled.
    
  • upon unscrewing pressure vacuum filler cap, flames spewed from filler neck, caused burning of paint around filler neck, fire extinquished itself.
    
  • tailgate power window blew out of vehicle while driving 55 mph on the express way.
    
  • this is very scary and has happened a number of times. Steering fails when brakes applied making a right turn. Panic steering presure, results in snapping noise and steering returns.
    

• 2. Electrical issues:

  • radio short circuited. This is the second occurrence.
    
  • radio circuit board short, causing radio to burn.
    
  • the electrical sun roof not working its the cable.
    
  • there is grinding and crunching noise. The brake calipers failed, and there was damage to the wheels. Took vehicle too dealer. However, the problem had not been resolved.
    
  • when opening the sliding door the door completely fell off the hinges.
    

• 3. Mechanical failures:

  • ABS, wearing of the disc rotors in the front without warning, after in for repair.
    
  • applied brakes and the entire latching mechanism tore out of sheet metal on driver's seat.
    
  • headlight plastic lens has faded, causing the light not to illuminate through.
    
  • loose glass pane on passenger side rear window.
    
  • rubber coupling on driveshaft located in the front and back of driveshaft cracked, causing excessive play, and loud rattling noise.
    
  • sliding door is extremely difficult to shut even with severe pressure.
