Common Complaints and Reliability

  • 1. Frame rust/corrosion issues:

    • 1992 Toyota frame is rusted through near the passenger side leaf spring, causing potential shifting and jumping off the frame
    • Complete cracking of the frame discovered on the left side during tire installation, metal flaking in hand for almost 18 inches
    • Left upper control arm frame mount broken off after hitting a bump
    • Extensive and severe frame corrosion leading to refusal of service for parking brake replacement, sides of frame members completely rusted through
    • Code 05V389000 steering recall, dealer only replaced steering relay rod, refused to complete recall service

  • 2. Brake issues:

    • Accelerator pedal sticks when coming to a complete stop
    • Front brake rotors warped, needed cutting down and replacing multiple times
    • Engine shut down due to overheating, engine replaced, problem persists
    • Brake and fuel lines suffering accelerated rate of corrosion, leaking and failing

  • 3. Head gasket failures:

    • Head gasket failed causing engine to die, engine replaced
    • Head gasket replaced under recall, later failed again suddenly while driving, causing towing
    • Head gasket failure leading to engine damage, repeated failures not covered by Toyota

  • 4. Other issues:

    • Air intake valve low, causing engine damage when driven through water
    • Shoulder belt locks up preventing driver from turning to look over shoulder
    • Vehicular rollover after hitting embankment
    • Loud noise from front of vehicle, passenger front tire tread separating
    • Engine shutting down while driving at any speed, requiring clutch depression to restart
    • Passenger front wheel separation from axle assembly
    • Non-catastrophic belt separation on tire

  • 5. Seat belt issues:

    • Driver and passenger side seat belts do not retract
    • Driver's shoulder belt locks up while driving
    • Driver's seat belt buckle will hold but not release
    • Passenger's 3-point restraint (retractor) failed
